چکیده

Two invasive weed species, Eurasian watermilfoil ( Myriophyllum spicatum L.) and parrotfeather [ Myriophyllum aquaticum (Vell.) Verdc.], were grown in outdoor mesocosms to determine the efficacy of carfentrazone-ethyl (a,2-dichloro-5[4-(difluoromethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-methyl-5-oxo-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl]-4-fluorobenzenepropanoic acid, ethyl ester), alone and in combination with 2,4-D, a herbicide routinely used for watermilfoil control. Eurasian watermilfoil control was ≥ 98% when carfentrazone rates were applied alone at ≥ 150 μg ai L -1 . Carfentrazone alone initially controlled parrotfeather; however, tissue viability 3 weeks after treatment suggested plant recovery was likely. Both Eurasian watermilfoil and parrotfeather control was 100% when 2,4-D was applied at 1000 μg ae. L -1 ; however, when 2,4-D rate was reduced to 100 μg ae L -1 control declined to <50%. Herbicide applications containing carfentrazone with low rates of 2,4-D resulted in 100% death of both plant species. These results indicate that Eurasian watermilfoil control can be obtained using carfentrazone alone; but the addition of low levels of 2,4-D may be needed to achieve desired parrotfeather control.

Carfentrazone in Combination with 2,4-d for the Control of Eurasian

Invasive plants degrade aquatic ecosystems throughout the United States. These weedy species destroy fish and wildlife habitat and interfere with water uses and ecological processes. Currently, there are only eight herbicides labeled for use in aquatic sites. In order to control newly introduced invasive plants and implement resistance management stewardship, additional chemistries and active i...

Parrotfeather ( Myriophyllum aquaticum Vell. Verdc.) and Eurasian watermilfoil ( Myriophyllum spicatum L.) are non-native invasive species that are often difficult to control. Once established, these species thrive in a variety of environmental conditions and have shown resiliency to control techniques. To date, chemical control has been the most effective method for managing infestations of th...

Combinations of Endothall with 2,4-D and Triclopyr for Eurasian Watermilfoil Control

BACKGROUND: Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) is a widespread submersed aquatic plant that causes nuisance problems across the continental United States. Eurasian watermilfoil is an herbaceous perennial submersed aquatic plant that typically grows in water depths of 1 to 3 m (Aiken et al. 1979). Vegetative propagation is either by direct stem fragments or by autofragmentation thr...

Hybrid watermilfoil lineages are more invasive and less sensitive to a commonly used herbicide than their exotic parent (Eurasian watermilfoil)

Hybridization may stimulate the evolution of invasiveness in human-impacted habitats if unique hybrid genotypes have higher fitness than parental genotypes. Human efforts to control invasive taxa frequently involve the intentional alteration of habitats, but few studies have considered whether hybridization can result in decreased sensitivity to control measures. Here, we investigate whether in...

The presence of Eurasian watermilfoil ( Myriophyllum spicatum L.) in aquatic systems has resulted in adverse impacts to native plant communities, ecosystem function, and water resource uses. Eurasian watermilfoil in Hayden Lake, Idaho, has spread rapidly, impacting the native plant community and recreational uses of the lake. Point intercept surveys were conducted to determine the current compo...
